Postgame Quotes: Kings vs. Warriors
October 17, 2009 by kingsconnect ·
Paul Westphal, Sacramento Head Coach
First win of the preseason…
“It’s nice to get a win. Again, if we had lost, I would be saying it’s preseason and we wanted to learn what we could learn. But we learned some things and got the win. It was nice.”
Jason Thompson’s game tonight…
“He’s been playing like that every practice, every game. He’s been a real rock for us. A real versatile player and he’s been going after the ball and getting rebounds. He’s been a really good performer the whole way.”
Jason Thompson’s improvement since July…
“I would just say that he wasn’t in shape during summer league. It was the time that he had off. Really after the first few days he’s been the player that we’ve seen. He’s a rare combination of size, agility with the ability to handle the ball. He’s been good once he got his timing.”
Tyreke Evans’ performance in tonight’s game…
“Tyreke belongs in the league. He had a few turnovers. I think he is going to start getting more calls when he goes to the hoop. Sometimes I think they grab his arm a little bit but he’s so strong that it’s hard to notice. That caused a couple of turnovers tonight. He belongs out there. Tonight, he showed why we think so highly of him.”
Desmond Mason’s contribution to the game…
“I thought tonight even though Desmond didn’t shoot the ball well, he was a big reason why we were able to win the game. He was part of the group in the first quarter that got us off to the big lead. In the fourth quarter when no one else could guard Corey Maggette he did a real good job on him.”
Spencer Hawes
When asked if it must be nice not to go against a Greg Oden or an Andrew Bynum?
“It’s a little different – they’re the same height, they’re just not quite as thick as those big boys so it makes it a little bit easier but they play a totally different style of basketball than either of those teams and we took advantage of it.”
“I think we just stuck to our principles – that was what was key. Coach said if we came in, rebounded, got back in transition and played unselfishly, we’d win. And from the bat we were just pounding them inside. In the past I think we made really an issue of trying to play to their strengths and trying to play small when we should’ve pounded them inside and tonight we went big and it paid off.”
On the rebounding:
“Hats off go to Jason Thompson first and foremost pulling down 20 of them. I think I looked up and saw at some point we were up about 20 total. We ended up with 11 blocked shots, but really controlling the paint makes a difference. At the end of the day it is basketball and usually who controls in there wins.”
Jason Thompson
On the win:
“It feels good. A lot of the younger guys, it’s their first win, so they were happy and it was good to have a quick start. Last year we had a lot of games where we would be neck-and-neck but we would give the game away early and give a lot of energy to come back and then maybe give it away again and then it would be too late. So it was good to get an early start and kind of maintain it at the end of the game.”
On his 20 points and 20 rebounds:
“It was good – I think it’s better when I have the mentality of just going to get every board rather than people telling me each quarter how many rebounds I have. So it was good to see that. It kind of puts a little bit of pressure on me to continue to do stuff like that too. I’m up for the challenge and I’m looking to try and do that every night to establish myself.”
“It was my first off-season in the NBA so I went through some certain periods. I never really was told to take a break so being a rookie and playing all 82 games last year, couple of coaches said to take a break so maybe my break was too long. I came into summer league in kind of average shape but preparing for training camp I felt better than ever so it’s good to be back to normal.”
Kevin Martin
“It was a good test for us. In their starting lineup they have three all-star caliber players and then they have Corey Maggette coming off the bench who scored 28. So it was a good test for our team and Jason Thompson controlled the glass. We just played great defense and just made plays and that’s what we’re going to have to do night in and night out.”
“Well, it was our fourth preseason game and coach and I talked before the game and it’s time to start to tune up some things. He kept me out on the floor a little longer and just wanted to play me like a regular game tonight.”
“We wanted to slow the game a little bit, wanted to have two guys on me and Tyreke (Evans) and we can just go in the post and attract double teams and kick it off to players and that’s what we did, especially a lot in the second quarter.”
Warriors Head Coach Don Nelson
On his impressions of the game:
“We shot the ball terribly. That is one of the things we normally do real well. It was a stinker. I wanted to play Jack (Stephen Jackson) a lot of minutes. He hasn’t played a lot of minutes this preseason. I feel good about him being able to play the whole game and thought he had a strong performance overall. C.J. (Watson) we need to get up to par. He hasn’t played for a while. We are still evaluating and making decisions on who plays best together and the kind of team we have to be. It was a good game for that.”
On the tough matchup at guard:
“It was a hard matchup for a rookie point guard. He (Stephen Curry) had a nightmare out there as to who to guard. We will do a better job after another week or so.”
On the Kings guard Tyreke Evans:
“He is able to play three different positions. He has a good handle on the ball, so he can do whatever Paul (Westphal) wants at the one, two or three. He could probably play four with that body. He is a very versatile player and played well tonight.”
Warriors Guard Monta Ellis
On not hitting his jump shots tonight:
“It was just going in and out. That is my shot. I make that shot 90% of the time but it just wasn’t going down. It wasn’t my night.”
On his impression of the game:
“We started the game off slow. We are still learning each other and growing as a team. We have more improvement to do.”
Warriors Forward Stephen Jackson
On playing all 48 minutes:
“I think I am in better shape than they thought I was. It felt good. Hopefully I don’t have to do that a lot. It felt good to get back on the court. It gave me another test to work on my composure with the refs. Just try and stay into my game. I think I got an A+ tonight.”
On the Kings backcourt:
“Kevin Martin is a 23, 25-point scorer. He just outsmarted our young guys. He is going to have a great year. Tyreke Evans is going to be real good. It was my first time seeing him play. They have a really good back court.”

Jason Thompson recorded a monsterous double-double with 20 points and 20 rebounds and Kevin Martin tallied a game-high 32 points as the Kings earned their first preseason victory with a 101-94 decision over Golden State at ARCO Arena. Thompson already had his double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) after the first quarter as the Kings led 31-20. The Kings built up the advantage by as many as 15 points early in the second quarter, but the Warriors rallied. The game became a see-saw affair until the Kings took control by going on a 9-0 run for a 91-82 lead with 5:19 left in the fourth quarter. Tyreke Evans finished with 16 points and Spencer Hawes tallied 11 points and nine rebounds. Of Thompson’s 20 boards, eight came on the offensive end. Martin was 15-of-15 from the free throw line. The Warriors were led by Corey Maggette’s 28 points off the bench. Stephen Jackson added 22 points and Anthony Randolph scored 12 points.
HIGHLIGHT MOMENTS: #1: Tyreke Evans had a beautiful wrap-around pass that led to a Jason Thompson cutting in the lane for a dunk (1:21 left in 1st Quarter). #2: With Corey Maggette backing down Donte’ Greene, Greene slapped the ball out of Maggette’s hands and started a Kings fastbreak. Thompson passed to Greene for the finishing lay-up (3:57 left in the 2nd Quarter). #3: A JT two-handed jam (3:12 left in the 4th Quarter).
