“We’re very excited about the number four pick,” Kings Co-Owner Gavin Maloof said. “We haven’t had this high of a pick in 18 years. Day of Volunteerism ‘09
March 24, 2009 by kingsconnect ·
**Check back often for updates throughout the day**
Hi Kings fans!
Today, Joe and Gavin Maloof have closed MS&E offices for the sixth annual Day of Volunteerism to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez. My name is Alex Sigua, the MS&E Community Insider on site to bring you updates from today’s special event.
Please continue to check Full Court Press throughout the day to see the amazing work conducted by full-time Team Members of MS&E, presenting partners Health Net, Raley’s & Bel Air and Wells Fargo, Kings players and Monarchs personnel.
9:55 a.m. - We have arrived at the site to begin refurbishing the Roberts Family Development Center at Twin Rivers Housing Complex. The positive buzz is building as the smiles on volunteers’ faces beam from ear to ear.
Upon arrival, all volunteers were greeted by Derrell Roberts, CEO and Co-Founder of Roberts Family Development Center. Earlier this morning, Roberts and MS&E President John Thomas presented motivating and inspirational speeches to the volunteers at ARCO Arena, prior to boarding the buses to the site.
10:30 a.m. - You can feel the positive energy in the air, as volunteers are busy throughout the Housing Complex. Splashes of fresh and vibrant paint are starting to cover the walls. Tons of cleaning is also taking place to refresh this complex. Think of today as an extreme home makeover, with the influence of MS&E, Health Net, Raley’s & Bel Air and Wells Fargo!
I’ll catch up with Derrell in a little bit to gather his thoughts on today’s festivities. Check back later to see the interview!
11:16 a.m. - Among the hustle and bustle are different areas of the Complex being developed with the generous help of MS&E’s presenting partners.
The doorway above leads into the deep red walls of what will become the Wells Fargo Financial Literacy Room. This interactive computer room will provide a spot for children to use Wells Fargo’s financial literacy program, Hands on Banking, to learn the basics of money management and importance of saving for the future.
Children will also be able to spend some time getting lost in a book while they enjoy the Health Net Reading Lounge. After completion, the Lounge will be full with a vast assortment of choices for kids to read. Later this afternoon, Kings players will help break in the new digs by reading with children!
Also in the works today is the Raley’s & Bel Air Kids Kitchen, where children will be able to hone their cooking skills and have a great time!
1:19 p.m. - A few hours left until the unveil ceremony. Additional paint is applied to the outside of the Center, landscaping is fully underway, and crafty construction continues inside.
2:02 p.m. - Had a special opportunity to sit down with Derrell and capture his insight on today’s memorable event. Here are his thoughts:
On the Roberts Family Development Center:
My wife, Tina and I co-founded this center eight years ago with the plan of providing family services that would enhance the lives of children and families in North Sacramento. Today, with this generous opportunity, we can now expand what we normally do to reach more than 200 kids in the course of a week. We’ll be adding another 100+ kids to that number of young people we have an impact on.
On the housing complex:
The housing complex has been here since 1942 and has grown over the years. Now, over 150 families live here. Those families primarily have children attending school in Twin Rivers Unified School District. Their kids attend schools that work with us in our Center. Today, we are renovating the former Child Development Center - Headstart building, and this new Center will give us an opportunity to serve those kids and other kids here on site.
On the involvement of MS&E, Health Net, Wells Fargo and Raley’s & Bel Air:
It’s a lot of things. First, we are very grateful that the Maloofs chose us and decided we were worthy of the opportunity to receive this special gift to the community. Second, it’s a little overwhelming to have seen the building when we first received it a few months ago and recognize that today, it’s fully operational with all the bells and whistles we would want for our kids. Also, it goes to show how thoughtful the folks at Maloof Sports & Entertainment are to think that this is what they should be doing on what would normally be an employees’ day off, Cesar Chavez Day.
On the legacy of Cesar Chavez:
I think one of the things that Cesar Chavez did was he recognized the importance of providing to those who didn’t have much in our society. He opened a lot of doors for people that today would not have been open, had he not stood up for working class people. Today, the Maloofs are honoring him through this service project. Because of his hard work and the work of those involved with the movement, we are here today on the cusp of another positive movement of change for kids in this community.
On future plans for the Center:
After today, we will start integrating our childrens programs on a regular basis here. We’ll get a feel of how often the kids will use the facility. We’ll integrate our existing after school programs, including the homework component and academic piece. We’ll also have the ability now to do family literacy, budgeting classes for parents, and daytime activities that are designed to empower the families who live here in Twin Rivers Housing Complex.
3:12 p.m. - Final preparations are being made for the unveil ceremony, taking place in a little under an hour. Everyone’s attitude is sky high in anticipation of the kids’ arrival. There’s nothing better than seeing the looks on the children’s faces as they walk in their new Center for the first time. Check out the progress:
4:15 p.m. - The ribbon cutting ceremony is underway! Hosted by emcee and Kings TV personality Jim Kozimor, Derrell expresses his thanks and recognizes MS&E, Wells Fargo, Raley’s & Bel Air and Health Net for all their hard work. Kevin and Cisco step up to carry out the honor of cutting the ribbon.
4:18 p.m. - The kids eagerly enter their new center…
4:25 p.m. - It’s fun all around as the smiling kids laugh and play with their favorite Kings players, who are enjoying this day’s pinnacle moment just as much.
JT joining kids in an intense game of Uno:
Rashad and BJax jamming on Guitar Hero with a youngster:
Andres coaching a budding ping pong player on the finer details of the game:
BJax having some fun with Red Ropes:
KMart providing guidance for a young Kings fan in the Wells Fargo Financial Literacy Room:
5:00 p.m. - As the Kings players and volunteers bid farewell to their new friends at the refurbished Roberts Family Development Center at Twin Rivers Housing Complex, everyone involved reflects back fondly on a day of hard work in honor of the legacy of Cesar Chavez.
Derrell and Tina Roberts outside their new Center:
Thanks to everyone for following us along during the sixth annual Day of Volunteerism. Hope you enjoyed the blog and GO KINGS!
Dinner and a Lottery
May 21, 2008 by Andrew Nicholson ·
Margie arrived at NBA studios in Secaucus, N.J., with the biggest entourage of any team rep in attendance. She was quickly greeted by NBA personnel, given her all-access credential and whisked off to the hospitality tent.
While the eventual drama unfolded later in the studio, much of the evening’s excitement took place in the hospitality tent that looked more like it belonged at the U.S. Open rather than connected to the studio in rainy New Jersey. Inside the 40-yard long and 50-foot wide tented-area was every type of food you could imagine. Cedar-planked salmon, chicken, roast beef, turkey and every type of pasta dish that would make even Tony Soprano’s mouth water.
After getting a rundown of the night’s activities, Margie was greeted by Kings co-owner Joe Maloof, who quickly took on the role of chaperone and escorted her all around the tent, introducing her to every big name in attendance. She had personal conversations with Mike Dunleavy, Larry Bird, Jay-Z, David Stern, Mitch Richmond and Dwyane Wade to name a few. Also receiving a lot of media attention in the tent were new Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, new Knicks GM Donnie Walsh and young stars Kevin Durant and Rudy Gay.
Margie wasn’t the only Parilo to be blown away by the generosity of all the celebs in attendance, however. Her husband, Mike, her son John and her two daughters — Theresa and Michelle — all mingled with the crowd and took enough photos to fill the next family album.
By the time she was finished in the tent, Margie, who was featured throughout last week by local media in Sacramento, had become a savvy media pro. She conducted interviews with ESPN, NBA.com and several other outlets in attendance. Then it was time for the biggest stage of all.
Following the three hours of eating, mingling and photo ops, it was finally time for her to make her national television debut. Before a live national audience watching on ESPN, Margie made her family and all Kings fans proud by representing the team with pride at the Lottery while being flanked by Bird and Jay-Z and even flawlessly conducting a live interview with ESPN’s Doris Burke during the show.
Thanks, Margie, for representing the Kings and making all of Sacramento proud!
Breakfast with Joe
May 20, 2008 by Andrew Nicholson ·
Margie and her family sat down for breakfast with a very special guest Tuesday morning, Kings co-owner Joe Maloof. The six-person party enjoyed coffee, OJ, fresh fruit, scones and more, inside the Four Seasons Hotel. It was the first time Joe had the chance to meet and hang out with the Kings LUCKIEST Season Ticket Holder.
Joe and Margie talked for more than an hour discussing the Draft, the Kings young core of players, the Parilo childrens’ college choices and the excitement of being on national TV with the likes of Larry Bird, Rudy Gay, Dwyane Wade and, the newly-added representative for the Nets, Jay-Z. Oh, and Joe also made sure to send the best regards of Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie, who Joe had just finished talking to prior to sitting down for the morning meal.
As the last sips of coffee and juice were had, Joe let Margie know he would possibly see her again in the near future, regardless of what pick her luck lands the Kings, as Margie and her daughter plan to celebrate their 50th and 21st birthdays, respectively, in Las Vegas this summer.
Margie couldn’t thank Joe and the Maloof family enough for the incredible opportunity she has been given, and, similarly, it was apparent how glad he was that he and his family were able to make another family so happy. Whether it is community giving or providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to a long-time Kings Season Ticket Holder, it’s clear that the generosity of the Maloofs is as genuine as it gets.
After the goodbyes, Margie took to her next adventure, a makeover and shopping spree, which by the excited look on her face, she was rather excited about!
This is it. We’re headed to the 2008 NBA Draft Lottery! The extravaganza that has been the Kings LUCKIEST Season Ticket Holder trip is reaching its zenith.
Cheers to Margie and lucky pennies! Let’s Go KINGS!
