Kings Reach Agreement in Principle with Paul Westphal

I just got off the phone with Kings President Geoff Petrie who confirmed that the organization has reached an agreement in principle with Paul Westphal to become the team’s head coach. Following are some direct quotes from Geoff on Paul’s hiring.

“We are really excited to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle with Paul Westphal to become the Kings Head Coach. We set some parameters at the start of this coaching search to look for a successful, experienced leader and Paul certainly meets those qualifications. He has a wealth of experience in the NBA as both a coach and player having won 63 percent (267-159) of his career games as a coach with winning records in both Phoenix and Seattle. He has been to the Finals three times, twice as a player and once as head coach of the Suns. He was very impressive during the interview process and in the subsequent conversations we have had since the interview. Paul also was greatly supported over the past few weeks by many of his former players and staff and others around the NBA game.”

Petrie Updates the Kings Coaching Search

Just had a chance to speak to Geoff Petrie following this afternoon’s interview with head coaching candidate Tom Thibodeau. Here are some direct quotes from Geoff regarding the Thibodeau interview as well as an update on the other candidates.

On Today’s Tom Thibodeau Interview
“We met for two-and-a-half hours in what I would categorize as an impressive overall interview. We talked at length on his basketball philosophies. Tom was very well prepared and is very engaging. He certainly is someone whose extensive NBA coaching experience, which includes approximately 140 Playoff games, really comes across when you sit down and talk with him. He is definitely a teacher with a pragmatic approach to development.”
