It was nice to go home and spend some time with family and friends over All-Star Weekend. I worked out a little bit so I wouldn’t come back rusty — got some shots up, ran with some former teammates from high school and college. But I do have some sad news for the first time in my blog.

Dealing with the Trade Deadline

With the impending trade deadline just days away, trade rumors are rampant around the League and especially abundant for Kings players, due to the team’s 11-43 record. As the players spread across the map to enjoy a bit of downtime over All-Star Weekend, they left Houston’s visitor locker room knowing within a week, the make-up of the team could change.

Given the uncertainty of the times and the potential impact trades have on players and their families, it’s no wonder they do their best to dispel notions they give trade rumors anything but a fleeting thought.

To gain perspective on how the annual trade deadline effects the players, Kings.com caught up with Kings Director of Player Personnel Jerry Reynolds.

“There’s a lot of discussion about the trade deadline – who’s coming, who’s going, who’s involved, who’s not – all that,” Reynolds said from the Kings practice facility. “In my opinion, over the years, it’s a distraction. Nothing can be done about it because there are so many rumors and 90 percent are based on nothing. Having said that, it does affect players, they say it doesn’t, but it does.

“I don’t think it’d be different than any other line of work. If you were an employee somewhere and you were reading on a daily basis how you could be traded or shifted to another job across the country, I think it’d affect you. Sometimes players even want to be traded, but it still affects them. It’s always good to get past the trade deadline period, whether you’re a losing team or a winning team.

“It’s just one of those situations for the couple of weeks prior to the trade deadline that there’s a lot of uncertainty, a lot of rumors and a lot of confusion.”

For Kings players, a positive of not attending All-Star Weekend is they can avoid trade conjecture, at least until Monday night.
