Pre-Draft Workout Wrap – May 11

May 11, 2010 by Andrew Nicholson

The Kings held their first multi-player pre-Draft workout at the team’s practice facility on Tuesday.

The group of NBA prospects included guard Jermaine Beal (Vanderbilt), guard Jeremy Wise (Bakersfield Jam), guard/forward Ryan Thompson (Rider), forward/center Charles Garcia (Seattle), forward Mac Koshwal (DePaul) and guard/forward Seth Tarver (Oregon State).

As he has since he arrived in Sacramento, Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie led the workout but he was joined by a host of basketball operations personnel who assist him with scouting and evaluations. Among the many on-hand were Wayne Cooper, Jerry Reynolds, Scotty Stirling and Paul Westphal.

After going through a gamut of individual and group drills in both full-court and half-court settings as well as scrimmaging, three of the prospects addressed the media.

Check out what tips Kings power forward/center Jason Thompson gave his younger brother, Ryan, what Wise remembers about playing against Kings point guard Tyreke Evans in college and what Garcia’s connection is to Kings forward Jon Brockman along with much more below.

Ryan Thompson

How did the workout go?

“It was a great workout. It was my first of many. I’m going to start traveling a lot more. I go to San Antonio next. I felt good. I liked the group of guys I was with. I won a lot, and just felt comfortable.”

Was it what you expected?

“Yes, I also talked to my brother a lot, so he kind of told me what to expect, what to look for and what people like and things like that, so I was prepared.”

How would you describe your game?

“I’m versatile. (I) can play the one, can play the two, maybe if they’re small, the three – I don’t know if I’m done growing yet, so who knows what could happen. I’m still trying to put on weight, so my position can vary. I’m a guy who can shoot the ball and drive first.”

How do you think you could fit in with the Sacramento Kings?

“They like (to play) fast-paced. Tyreke pushes the ball a lot. They’re all very versatile – (Jason’s) a versatile big, Spencer’s versatile and can shoot the ball and I’m a versatile player, too, so I could see myself fitting in here.”

Did your brother give you any advice before you came here?

“Basically, he just said to do everything I can do, don’t try to show them things I can’t, just play my game and let the game come to me.”

What was it like playing with your brother in college and high school?

“It was great. I know his game. He knows my game like the back of his hand. I just know where he’s going to be on the court at all times and we just have fun playing together.”

How much did you two push each other to be in this position today?

“We’re two of the most competitive people — we both love winning — even when it’s outside and we’re just playing one-on-one. We’re always competing at everything, whether it’s shooting drills or playing one-on-one. He just has a love for the game and so do I, and we both love winning.”

Jeremy Wise

How did one season in the D-League help you develop your game?

“It was pretty good because when I was at Southern Miss they had me playing shooting guard, so this year’s go-round I was playing the point. I became accustomed to the point guard role, and it went smoothly.”

What do you remember about playing against Tyreke in college?

“It was pretty good. Watching him make the transition from playing at Memphis to going straight to the League, it’s just amazing.”

How do you think you would fit in with the Kings?

“I feel like I would matchup pretty well (as a) point guard coming off the bench. My game is in transition, and I see (the Kings) do that a little bit, so I think I would fit in pretty well.”

Charles Garcia

What do you bring to an NBA team?

“Athleticism, my length, ability to dribble the ball, (which) most guys my height can’t do, and I can shoot outside and spread the floor.”

To which NBA player would you compare your game?

“Everybody says Danny Granger because I get to the free throw line a lot, but I look at Lamar Odom a lot.”

How do you feel like you would fit in with this team?

“I think I’d fit in perfectly. They’re young. They (play) up and down. Tyreke Evans, he’ll be a great player — he won Rookie of the Year — so I think it’d be great.”

After almost attending the University of Washington, do you have familiarity with Kings forward Jon Brockman?

“I only met him on my visit and talked to him a little bit. We talk here and there because his brother, Paul, was our manager at Seattle U.”

We saw Petrie and some of the Kings assistant coaches stop play to discus things during drills. What pointers were they sharing with you?

“How to set picks, hedge, talk a little bit, help out your teammates and stuff like that – simple things.”

Kings notes

Following the prospects workout, Brockman took the court along with several Kings assistant coaches as Westphal looked on. In the few minutes media was inside the gym, the Kings rebound-minded forward worked on his midrange jump shot, taking spot-up and off-the-dribble jumpers inside the three-point line.

Stay tuned for additional Kings pre-Draft workout coverage later this week.
