What’s Next for the Kings?

April 21, 2010 by Andrew Nicholson

From pre-Draft preparation to vacation and offseason workouts, Kings Head Coach Paul Westphal and forward Carl Landry take a timeout to give Kings fans an inside look at what’s next for coaches and players.

How does the offseason process begin for you and your staff?

Westphal: “The first thing we do is get together with the players. Then, the coaches get together and just talk logistics – what the summer is going to look like schedule-wise.

“Then, we wait to find out who’s going to be in the Draft, who declares (Early Entry Eligibility Deadline is 8:59 p.m. PST, April 25). Then, you start to do all your homework to sift through information to see which players we might think can help us. You do it with video work, you talk to people, you make lists, you bring in players to work out, you go watch players work out – everybody will be immersing themselves in finding out who these guys are and which ones might be able to help the Kings, if we can get them.”

How does the team’s scouting staff assist you and the assistant coaches leading up to the Draft?

Westphal: “They’ve been working all year, so they’ll try to educate the coaches and catch us up to speed. Certainly, we can never know as well as the scouts what’s available out there, but we can get a pretty good idea, help them know what we’re looking for and zero-in on a few players.”

Will you have an opportunity to take a break before preparation for the Draft begins?

Westphal: “We’ll get away a little, especially the first couple of weeks. We can watch the Playoff games from wherever we are — I think we’re interested in that. For the most part, the players will disperse and the coaches will disperse at least for a couple weeks.”

What’s the best way to tip-off an NBA offseason?

Landry: “Just get away from basketball for the first couple weeks, enjoy your summer and spend time with the ones you love.”

What does your offseason workout schedule look like?

Landry: “I’ll be at a place called St. Vincent Sports Performance bettering my basketball IQ, my passing, my rebounding, scoring and defense with Ed Schilling, who’s a former NBA and Memphis Tigers’ assistant coach. Greg Oden, Daequan Cook, Mike Conley, Rodney Carney, Eric Gordon, Courtney Lee (will be there, too).”

Will you be spending any of your summertime in Sacramento?

Landry: “I have to find a place to stay and move everything out here. I’ll probably have a camp here this summer, so I’ll be back and forth. I’ll have a website up in the next few weeks, CarlLandry.com, so Kings fans looking for more info can check it out.”

Stay current with Full Court Press for an exclusive Q&A with Kings assistant and Hall-of-Fame coach Pete Carril later this week.

Did you know?

During the 2008-09 season, the Kings were 7-23 in games decided by six points or less. In 2009-10, Sacramento was 14-13 in games decided by a half-dozen points or less.

Do you know?

Of the 13 Kings players on the roster, more than a third of them are native to non-U.S. cities – can you name each of the foreign-born players and in what city they’re from?

Is it October yet???? Just cant wait for the lotery, draft, preseason…….. you get the idea. Love the 2010 team but I'm looking forward to welcoming any new additions!! Playoffs are just plain boring with out the KINGS!

I really like what I've seen and heard from Carl. His work ethic and attitude set a good example and its kinda like JT's. Good to hear he's going to keep busy working on his game during the summer and maybe pic up some more rebounds for us next year!
My guesses for the question — Francisco, Beno, Andres, OMRI of course! And I don't know the other one, maybe Ime…

The only way the Kings are going to win a championship is by going through Los Angales. This off season we need to pick up some length and height to be able to compete with the Lakers front line and to aid Carl Landry who did an outstanding job this season. The free agents this summer that I would like to see the Maloofs pick up to build this team around Tyreke Evans are Amarie Stoudimire, or Chris Bosh. Those are the big name players who we can afford and that would be willing to come to a small market like Sacramento. Then the draft will also give us a chance to pick up another stud to help our young and exciting Sacramento Kings. Good luck this off season with acquiring the right players to surround Tyreke with more talent for the goal of knocking off the Lakers and winning our first world title. GO KINGS!

Greg Oden, Daequan Cook, Mike Conley, Rodney Carney, Eric Gordon, Courtney Lee…..looks like Landry wants to learn that Indianapolis style of play.

Wasn't Donte born outside the country? I think the guys who were born outside of the country are Beno, Noc, Greene, Casspi and Garcia.
Great point up there Bobby — the Mavs and Lakers are who we have to go through in my eyes and the Thunder a no joke either.

  8. johnson on April 22nd, 2010 4:23 pm

what do you guys think of gordon haywood

  9. ♛SacKing♛ on April 22nd, 2010 6:38 pm

Kayte was right on point when she brought up our need for 3 point threats to clear lanes for Reke… here are a few that are pretty good 3 point percentage shooters that are gonna be free agents in the offseason… Mike Miller, Kyle Korver, Keith Bogans, Jason Kapono, Michael Redd, Daequan Cook, D WADE, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce just to name a few… the Kings need to act fast if we want the best/cheapest free agent out there… LETS GO KINGS!!! 2010/2011 PLAYOFFS?!

  10. tony on April 22nd, 2010 9:48 pm

All the kings need is a Center. Sorry Hawes but you had your chance and you got to go. Cousin or Aldrich will good pick up same if the kings pick Tuner but that means kings have to get rid of some people. Kings need to trade Hawes and Nocioni in a package deal to pick up somebody anybody or a 1st round pick some where between 13-30.

wooo we have some Gordon Haywood Fans, I Think He Can Be Like A Peja Guy For The Kings or LiKE A Hedo? If Kings Get The 2 OR 1 Draft Pick You Guys Have To Get Turner….Just Imagain Tyreke And Evan Play OMG That's The Future!!!!!!! I Think Geoff Petire On Draft Night Has To Make A Trade Of Gordon Haywood For Nocioni Right…Nocioni Is A Bad Influentally Not Even That Good…By The Way Trade Ime Udoka and Francisco Garcia And Nocioni For Gordon Haywood!!!!!
So This IS THE TEAM STATERS

    CENTER: Spencer Hawes
    POWER F:Carl Landry
    SMALL F:Gordon Haywood
    Shooting G: Turner/Evans
    Point Guard: Turner/Evans

    BENCH:
    C:JASON TOMPSON
    POWERFOWARD:JOHN BROCKMAN
    SMALL F: ORMI CASSPI
    SHOOTING:Donte Greene
    Point Guard: Beno Udrth

Now This Is A Championship Team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Couldnt agree with you more!!!

  13. wnbaGuy916 on April 23rd, 2010 12:35 am

Tony..Couldnt agree with you more!! Spencer, you a legit 7 footer, but with your SIZE you need to be alot more physical down there..and Nocioni is good also, but he talks alot and gets technical fouls alot to and those are free points..and he shoots some ugly looking shots some times to but i dont want to get at him to much..

  14. AndrewNicholson on April 23rd, 2010 2:02 am

Thank you for guessing, carol. You had four of the players correct — Cisco, Beno, Noc and Casspi — Dontè is the fifth player born outside the U.S.

  15. AndrewNicholson on April 23rd, 2010 2:05 am

Thank you for guessing, Jerry. You're right — DG was born in Munich, Germany. Congratulations on guessing all five foreign-born players correctly!

  16. niel on April 23rd, 2010 2:28 pm

kings should particularly pick either turner, haywood in the 1st round and in the 2nd round, they rather opt to two blue devils: scheyer and kyle "big shot" singler. now, if maloof wants to see his team more on the mature side he'd rather get amare

  17. JAMES on April 23rd, 2010 4:47 pm

THANKS NIEL GORDON HAYWOOD IS A BEAS11

  18. sactown on April 23rd, 2010 11:13 pm

Kings first pick should be a big center with athleticism. Then maybe a shooting guard to compliment tyreke so beno can come off the bench since the kings have like no point guards. Unless they can get a big time free agent thats a center which is highly unlikely then they should go for a scorer first but this also depends on their draft position

  19. Alfred Avalos on April 26th, 2010 7:19 pm

Carl Landry knows what he's doing… Thats why he makes a good King!

  20. niel on April 29th, 2010 2:50 pm

yeah gordon hayward's undeniably one of the best young stars in the us ncaa, he can power the kings interior offense

  21. niel on April 29th, 2010 2:59 pm

the kings better negotiate with strong forwards and floor generals like battier, marcus williams, and travis outlaw(clippers won't use him so much because they've got lots of big guys on the paint who can give them shots and defend the basket, so i think they won't give him bigger minutes to play but be sitting on the bench )

  22. niel on April 30th, 2010 3:00 pm

favors for sacramento kings come lottery pick

  23. kit on April 30th, 2010 5:14 pm

Evans needs a great inside player. Kings have no high paid players at this point. They can pick up Amare, Bosh, or even Boozer. They are all free agents and would play very well with Evens. These are high paid players and kings can easily pick them up without paying any luxury tax or be put in any harm. This is the time to began rebuilding the team since they have a great starting point, Evans.

  24. kings fan on May 2nd, 2010 7:16 am

pick up chris bosh!!!!!!!!!!! he'll love the idea of working with tyreke ..with bosh we'll make it to the playoffs for sure…we need to build around tyreke ..and if we get a lebron or a wade it'll be a struggle for whose team it is…like it was with kmart…but bosh wouldnt care he just plays cuz hes a basketball player like TYREKE!!!
