Postgame Quotes: Kings vs. Bucks

March 19, 2010 by kingsconnect

KINGS HEAD COACH PAUL WESTPHAL

“That was a tough loss to absorb. That was the second hottest team in the NBA and we did everything to earn that win except to cash in the win at the end. I thought that we made our free throws down the stretch, we made them take the shots we wanted them to take for the most part and they hit some shots that defy description. All you can really say is it had to be their night. I thought we played well enough to win that game in so many ways. It’s just a tough one to take when you have to look at the loss in the standings on your record when we played as well as we did against a team that is that good. There are things to learn from it and we will learn from it. There were times in milking the shot clock we didn’t get into our offense soon enough and that’s kind of a quibble. I don’t think it’s anything I’m going to be too upset about but we need to get better at that, no question about it. That game was there and they started making shots that ordinarily they take those shots the game is over, it’s in our pocket. So that was a tough one.”

“Tyreke (Evans) has a concussion. He has some damage to his teeth and his jaw. There will be more tests. He obviously isn’t going with us to LA. We have no idea how long he’ll be out or how serious the injury is until the doctors are able to really examine him with all the equipment they have so that’s the update on that.”

“I think our team played a superb game. We really did everything we could except have more points at the end of the game. I’m very proud of the way we’re playing and competing against one of the top teams in the league.”

“I’m a big believer in fouling when the situation warrants it. When (Ersan) Ilyasova hit that shot he was highly contested, and I think there were maybe 20 seconds left on the game clock – it was too early to foul. I like to foul in the last few seconds. But that shot, that was a one out of 50 (that he’d make) and I don’t think that would’ve been the right play. I do like fouling but it’s a play you have to be careful of and when a guy is taking a shot that’s a low percentage I think it would be a shame to foul in that situation.”

“We were trying to get the ball to Carl (Landry) a lot, believe it or not. They did a good job of denying him and sometimes when he was hot we ran plays away from him that as we get a little more familiar with each other, we won’t do that. All of our offense is not going to somebody either; a lot of times we just get some motion and cuts. We’re confident in all our players and we did that a lot of times too.”

“Beno (Udrih) started off real cold even though he was getting great shots in the first quarter. He kept getting the shots and Beno is a really good shooter and they started to go for him. I wish that one would have gone down at the end – he made a great play and the ball just rolled off. It’s that kind of night but Beno had an outstanding game at both ends of the floor.”

Carl Landry

On Andrew Bogut
“We know that at any given time he is capable of going off. He can score 20, 30, 40 points any night. He is a good player and one of the best big men in the league. We did a good job, but at the end of the night they came out with the victory.”

On the overtime
“They (the Bucks) did a good job of executing their stuff. When they threw it into (Andrew) Bogut and then passed to (Brandon) Jennings then he hit it. That was a good job of executing offense. The first time he caught it in the post and made a right handed hook shot, the second time we thought they were going to do the same and they set a flare on the weak side. They just did a really good job of executing their stuff tonight. That is why they are where they are at. They did a good job of executing.”

On the physical play especially in second half
“It was an overtime game. They may have had to let some calls go and let us play. It wasn’t like that tonight and some things just didn’t go our way and we didn’t get the win.”

On Tyreke injury
“I know that I shot the ball and then tried to get the offensive rebound. Tyreke was right there and unfortunately I got the offensive foul. Tyreke said that he got hit by Ilyasova. He will be alright.”

On John Salmons fitting with the Bucks
“It is something that they needed. When Michael Redd went down, I knew that with the trade with Salmons, that he was going to be able to fit in. It fits just perfectly. That is someone that they needed in Milwaukee, a shooting guard/small forward to come in and be offensively aggressive. That is the type of player that John Salmons in and he fits in perfectly with that system.”

Beno Udrih

On Tyreke’s injury
“It was a really tough finish and Tyreke got hit in his mouth. It’s always tough. Tyreke is the guy that a lot of teams are concentrating on and he gets hit often. It is what it is. We just have to forget about this loss and we have to go to L.A. and try to get the win.”

On the game plan tonight
“I was just trying to be aggressive. In the last games I wasn’t aggressive enough, so I thought I have to do something. I switched gears and was trying to be aggressive. I don’t like to look at myself when I had a good game and my team losses. I’d rather score 10 points less and win.”

On Brandon Jennings
“He is a good player. He knows what his game is. He was shooting great tonight. He definitely made some big shots for them and they got the win.”

Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Scott Skiles

On being down nine with three minutes left in regulation
“We were able to steal it. We were able to execute well after some timeouts and got some baskets and Ersan Ilyasova hit the big one. We were very fortunate to have that on a night where we didn’t play that well.”

On the play of Brandon Jennings
“I thought Brandon was good. He made a bunch of big plays for us. For most of the game, we didn’t have our typical defensive effort. But, we hung in there, gave ourselves a chance and then we were able to take advantage of it.

On the play of Ersan Ilyasova
“He was very good on the glass. Ersan is very good that, even if he can’t get the rebound, he at least gets a finger on it and maybe someone else gets it. His activity was good for us for sure.”

“(Carl) Landry is a tough matchup for him because he is so broad. He did a nice job. He got his body in there and tried to take charges. As we mentioned, he was on the glass and hit the biggest shot. We don’t have a chance if he doesn’t hit that shot.”

On whether he was pleased by the win
“Well, I am pleased with the win. The game in total, we had too many possessions, much like the Clippers game, where we weren’t at full throttle. We were able to stay close enough and give ourselves a chance and make big plays. The guys hung tough on a night where we didn’t play as well. It was very similar to the Clippers game. This game, when we were able to make up ground, we were able to take advantage of it.”

On John Salmons guarding Tyreke Evans
I thought he was very good. He really stood out with his defense on Tyreke. He denied him the ball, he got in front of him when he could, and got some help, but for the most part played him really well one-on-one.

Milwaukee Bucks Guard Brandon Jennings

On pulling out the hard fought win
“We just kept fighting. Ersan hit a big three. John Salmons hit a few big threes. I traveled on that one play, but I was able to get it to John Salmons. But hey, we just kept fighting and that is why we are at where we are at. We just keep fighting and we never get up.”

On the rookie race on
“Right now, it’s not about me. It’s about my teammates. John Salmons played good today. Andrew Bogut played good today. Ersan hit some big shots. Like I told you this morning, my job is to make sure Andrew Bogut is an all-star every year and make sure everyone gets better and make sure we make the playoffs every year. So a win like this, this is like a playoff game. We just kept fighting.”
