Feast for a King & Some Thoughts on Hoops
December 2, 2008 by Jason Thompson
I hope everybody had a good Thanksgiving!
It was my first Thanksgiving away from my family. They are about 3,000 miles away, but I got to have a little conference call where I called the house phone and talked to everybody. So that was good, but it was still sad to not be with them. I’m over here though, for all the good reasons, just trying to make our team better.
We had a few tough losses but guys are starting to get healthy and come back. Cisco’s played a few games and he’s starting to get back on track. I think he’s in the starting lineup tonight against the Jazz and Kevin’s going to be back, probably our next game, which will be good. Their returns make me play away from the three. I’ll probably play more of the four and five but sometimes three, if guys are in foul trouble or stuff like that.
The lineups are going to be mixed around until guys are 100 percent healthy and we’re able to see what the good rotations are going to be. So it’s interesting but I knew that coming in. You just have to earn your minutes and see what happens.
I had good runs earlier in the year. I guess I met some expectations that people didn’t think I had in me — coming out in the first game with a double-double and starting 10 games and playing solid. Getting starts against Detroit, San Antonio, Phoenix and the Lakers — all teams you’d want to start against — they are teams that are playoff bound and have a lot of veteran guys with Championships. So what better way to get good with a lot of minutes and play in tough games? We had a lot of tough losses but those were losses we had chances to win the games, so I feel real confident about that. Hopefully, I can just bring that confidence throughout the season and hopefully we can make a run before All-Star break.
So Paolo commented on my last blog and was curious what my favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving is, I can’t say just one thing. I don’t go with the standardized turkey. I go with the smoked turkey with my grandmother’s specialty — macaroni and cheese with the big, big noodles! And then you have to have the mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows melted on top, which is real good. And you can’t forget the Jell-O mold — I don’t think a lot of people know about that. It’s a strawberry Jell-O with marshmallows mixed in it and whipped cream — it’s somethin’ good! It’s a nice dessert with some banana pudding. Hopefully when they come out here later in the season, they can spread the love around Sacramento! I almost forgot the drink that goes with it… I can’t remember the name of it, but it’s a sherbet with ginger ale mixed in and you have it with your meal. Man, I actually miss that. I might have to make that on my own!
Since I was in Sacramento for T-Day, I went over to Coach Chuck’s house. Coach Brown was there and so were Coach Theus and their families. And my teammate Bobby Brown came too. We were the only players but it was good. We had to go to Utah that day, but we got the food in and had practice that night before we left to play the Jazz the next day. I didn’t get to spend it with my family but it’s a new family that I got to spend it with.
We definitely have to take these three games in 11 days to our advantage, which is getting better as a team by doing drills, watching all the film, getting rest and knowing we can’t play like we’ve been playing. November is over now and December’s games are coming, so we know we have to have a fresh start to begin the month. We have another home game tonight and we have to bring a lot of energy early and start getting these ‘Ws.’ We had struggled earlier in the year on the road and then we had a three-game home stand with wins, so now we have to get a new streak going on the positive side.
To start the month of December, I want to wish a ‘Happy Holidays’ to everyone. I know back home it’s probably snowing a little bit and people are putting their Christmas lights up and stuff like that. So everyone be safe for the holidays, and I’m definitely going to have a couple more blogs before Christmas and New Years so keep lookin’ out. And check out my boy Donté Greene’s show, Episode 2 is coming soon! A special guest is on there, I won’t say who!
Until next time, have fun, be safe and I hope to see everyone out at ARCO.
