Casspi Stops to Shop

June 29, 2009 by Andrew Nicholson

casspits22

After becoming the first Israeli player selected in the first round of the NBA Draft when the Sacramento Kings drafted him with the 23rd overall pick on June 25, Omri Casspi spoke emotionally and glowingly about what the feat meant to him, his family and country.

Now, a few days removed from his Tel Aviv post-Draft press conference that received national attention in Israel and his introduction to Kings fans in Sacramento, Casspi found time to stop by ARCO Arena.

Like many Kings draftees before him, Casspi wasn’t there to hit the hardwood, he was at the Sacramento Team Store, purchasing Kings and Monarchs paraphernalia for friends, family and himself.

While fellow Sacramento Kings draftees Tyreke Evans and Jon Brockman have returned to their U.S. hometowns in preparation for the team’s mini camp in Las Vegas, which tips off on July 8, Casspi remains in Sacramento some 7,500 miles from his hometown.

Watch out, NBA- this Casspi dude is one tough guy.

Omri Casspi is probably the biggest steal in the NBA draft, other than San Antonio taking Dejuan Blair. Casspi is very similar to Nocioni in the fact that he can play the 3 or 4, is very active on the offense and defensive end of the floor, and is tough as nails. He, along with Brockman and of course Tyreke Evans, will make a splash into the NBA for the Kings next season. Watch for the Kings to make a playoff push!

Trailblazers took Victor Claver, then the Kings took Omri Casspi…it will be interesting to see Victor and Omri go head to head and see down the line who ends up being the better forward. I think the Kings got the better of the two, naturally….to oversimplify…Claver is a little more athletic, but Omri is more complete, has more tools…

Look the Kings are still at least a couple of years from the playoffs with this squad. The Draft was good but lets remember this team last year started a rebuilding process, which is gonna take some time.

This is interesting. The Kings (Rochester Royals) founder/owner/coach Les Harrison was inducted into the International Jewish Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980. Les Harrison led the Rochester Royals to win the 1951 NBA Championship.
Here is an article about Les Harrison:

The Kings just gained 6 million new fans from Israel. Plus a lot more jewish people in the states will be interested in Sacramento from now on. Other then the fact that Casspi is a great player and a great fighter, this is also a good economic move from Sacramento.
