Kings Reach Agreement in Principle with Paul Westphal

June 9, 2009 by Troy Hanson

I just got off the phone with Kings President Geoff Petrie who confirmed that the organization has reached an agreement in principle with Paul Westphal to become the team’s head coach. Following are some direct quotes from Geoff on Paul’s hiring.

“We are really excited to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle with Paul Westphal to become the Kings Head Coach. We set some parameters at the start of this coaching search to look for a successful, experienced leader and Paul certainly meets those qualifications. He has a wealth of experience in the NBA as both a coach and player having won 63 percent (267-159) of his career games as a coach with winning records in both Phoenix and Seattle. He has been to the Finals three times, twice as a player and once as head coach of the Suns. He was very impressive during the interview process and in the subsequent conversations we have had since the interview. Paul also was greatly supported over the past few weeks by many of his former players and staff and others around the NBA game.”

Thank God. I feared they would try yet another experiment. Go with the only proven commodity on the market, not another "Well he won three championships at Sarah Lawrence." Westphal is legit and it's only a two year deal for almost no money, so if a coach with an nba ring as a HEAD coach becomes available next year, it's still doable.

I guess that's cool, now all we need is Brandon Jennings+the other two picks, whoever they are, and we're good.

  11. nate on June 9th, 2009 10:41 pm

Good choice, probably the best coach that was available on the market, but the Maloofs still made a HUGE mistake by laying off Rick Adelman in the first place, sending the Kings into a downward spiral.

I'm hearing some great things about this guy, and so far i have mixed emotions. I don't want to get overly excited because Petrie said great things about the Musselman and Theus. I think he might be a great coach but he needs to be surrounded by some great players. Hopefully Petrie makes some great picks and really finds an all-star player, which sac town has lacked for a while. I'm taking about a mitch richmond type player.

westphal is a great coach perriod. watch out nba here come the kings, a good draft and a couple of good moves this off season and we will be back

lets just this is a good choice we really need to get back in the basketball world

  17. Narek on June 10th, 2009 12:20 am

Well this was kind of an out of no where hire! but i really like the move, he is a proven winner in the NBA both as a coach and a player! that by it self already bring in a winning mindset and experience! now i personally hope that the great point guard ricky rubio from spain is available at the 4th pick,i know griffin is getting all the hype but in the long run rubio will have a way better career! with him and a couple of good off season signings basketball in Sacramento will be back to what we are used to,which is great team basketball which leads to a lot of winning!!!!!

  18. George W. Bush on June 10th, 2009 1:03 am

thanks petrie for getting'r done. now that a head coach is in place, we can focus on the draft. =)

  19. Austin on June 10th, 2009 1:36 am

well first I'd like to say that letting rick adelman go when we did was the most disappointing event and from then on it just got worse. I would've liked to see Avery Johnson on the sideline for us, but i knew that was close to impossible. Rambis was my choice out of the 3 we interviewed, not to knock on Westphal at all cuz he's a great coach. It's a good choice for us and I'm happy we made this decision over Thibodeau. Now let's make good choices in the draft and hopefully we'll get back on track

  20. sactownkings on June 10th, 2009 5:11 am

could of been better but if westphal can be a rick adelman or better im good with it

  21. Woody on June 10th, 2009 7:16 am

From what I've read about his bio, I'm not sure this is the guy we want. Yah, he coached a team to the finals, but that was a team with KJ and Barkley. The guy got fired from the Suns, the Sonics, and Pepperdine in years that they didn't have great players. I know that people keep saying this is draft is going to help our team, but I have never seen a rookie change the worst team in the league into a contender. I'm just hoping we get some proven NBA players around this guy so that he actually has a bit of a chance to succeed…

  22. kingsfanatic on June 10th, 2009 8:40 am

let not get too hyped people… it's a coach, yeah a proven one, but we need a good draft and offseason to compete for a playoff run even. Let's hope the guy we pick is similar to Chris Paul at 4 for the hornets a few years back. i like evans and jennings but would not be suprised if we go big with this pick because of the amount of quality points in the draft look for jordan hill to come off the board with the kings hope for one of the following to fall to 23 Calathes,Lawson, Mills, or Collison, and in a dream situation maybe teague, or maynor.

  23. noneofurs on June 10th, 2009 9:14 am

    i love it

  24. Nate on June 10th, 2009 9:24 am

i agree haha rick adelman is what made the Kings… and now hes making the Rockets even better too .. bad choice

  25. GoKingsFan_CAM on June 10th, 2009 9:26 am

Petrie is coming through with his criteria. That is always good. Westphal should work out good with the Kings. A winning coach always will help a team. I believe we need to at least stick with a coach and stop the rotating door for coaching position. Now we need to fill the point gaurd position with a strong player. There are allot of good canditates out their with Evans, Jennings, and Rubio.

  26. Homegrown on June 10th, 2009 10:02 am

Great we have a new coach. Lets hope he lasts longer than one season. The team needs stability in the coaching staff and I think it takes longer than a season for the coaches and the players to get into a rythm. With saying that I hope the players will embrace the coaches methods and work like a team should. NOW HOW ABOUT THAT NEW ARENA???????

  27. Bojan on June 10th, 2009 12:31 pm

Honestly its not really all about the coach, but more about the players. And we will see what the Kings decide to do personnel wise this off season. But don't get me wrong, i definitely like the hiring of Mr. Westphal.

  28. patfromsac on June 10th, 2009 12:48 pm

Oh great, Westphal's stength is in coaching veterans and we are stacked with young, undeveloped players. But I guess he met the MaGoof''s price tag criteria. He does have NBA coaching experiences so let's give him a chance. We can't lose any more games than the last hideous season — can we ?

  29. frustrated kings fan on June 10th, 2009 1:52 pm

im really liking that name of the MaGoof's. fits them perfectly

  30. Rick Sheinfield on June 10th, 2009 2:07 pm

Great choice. Terrific coach, high character person. Team will run, play hard and play the right way. I expect great improvement and success. Bravo, Kings!

  31. tine2x on June 10th, 2009 3:41 pm

Good decision to get P.Westphal over Rambis. He's a proven head coach.
    Having won 63 percent (267-159), that's a really a good choice!
and have not coach for a while/years… doesn't mean he's already forgotten how to coach, of course, the knowledge still there!

  32. Da Prophhecy #33 on June 10th, 2009 3:49 pm

Does anyone have any info on his coaching philosophy?

  34. getPGwithbounce on June 10th, 2009 5:09 pm

Westphal was headcoach of the Suns that went to the Finals…were any of the other choices head coaches of teams that went to the Finals? hmmm…was it really that hard of a decision?

  35. Juan Salazar on June 10th, 2009 5:26 pm

Good for Mr. Paul Westphal ,good choice by the Kings Good Luck!!!

  36. ruetei on June 10th, 2009 5:36 pm

Good job Petrie, I hope he starts soon with the drafts workouts and have an input on who the kings would pick for the drafts. I like Tyreke for the 4th pick.

  37. Kingsfan1323 on June 10th, 2009 11:42 pm

Finally a good choice! I was beggining to wonder if the Kings were going to find another wannabe NBA coach but they finally selected a strong and very good coach. I have complete confidence in this man to ead us to some victories!

  38. DJ_D3 on June 11th, 2009 1:44 am

Ok Pauls a good choice but we need some real talent on the team…How come we can't get Vince Carter,Amerie Staudemire or even Tracy McGrady?

Why are we always short changing ourselves?

  39. Bojan on June 11th, 2009 6:32 am

Vince and T-Mac are at the end of their run, and who knows about Amare, especially after having that many knee surgeries. There is no need to bring in overpaid players that are either at the downside of their careers or that have potentially serious health issues. Building a team from the ground up does not happen over night, it takes years. And having some nice young talent along with a proven veteran coach could to be very successful.

  40. Jason on June 11th, 2009 10:45 am

I'm real happy with this new hire. Go kingssssssss

  41. The Truth on June 11th, 2009 10:57 am

I'm pleased with the pick. But, Ike Diogu's better than anyone we're going to draft. He's put in his time, he's proven what he can do in the little play he was finally given.. If the powers that be drop Hurricane Ike, I'm done.

  48. John Cramer on June 12th, 2009 7:36 pm

The kings need a big time big man coach, I hear Truck Robinson is being mentioned, played with Westphal in Phoenix, 11 year veteran, great rebounder, knows the game, he would be a valuable assistant. Mentally tough.

  49. G Leung on June 12th, 2009 8:27 pm

Good to have a new coach but more important about the players, especially their confidence level. We need a point point who at least has Mike Bibby's level, pass the ball, create fast break, and shoot some 3 points. For the two second round picks, let's pick some physically strong guys who can get rebounds, someone like Paul Millsap and Carlo Boozer, will definitely help King's poor defense, which is the major factor why they only won 17 games last season.
