Petrie on Draft Lottery Outcome
May 19, 2009 by Troy Hanson
I had a chance to speak to Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie shortly after he landed in San Francisco tonight in return from a European scouting trip. Here are some direct quotes from Geoff, upon hearing the Kings Draft Lottery results.
“We have done a lot of preparatory work for this draft and we will continue to do extensive evaluation over the course of the remaining month or so leading up to the draft. We will do everything we can to come up with an outstanding young player to fill one of the needs on our roster. Also keep in mind that we have the 23rd and 31st picks as well. So we have an opportunity to be very involved in this draft at different levels.”

Number 4 pick…This the par for the course..Its the iceing on a horrible season..
What he said ^^^ I mean damn! We can't even get a top 3 pick? WTF!? I really wanted to see us get Griffin or Rubio cuz the rest of the draft is reeeally weak. Next season ain't lookin so good either…
this isnt as bad as people are thinking. number 1 pick means we take a player at a position we dont need. at 4 we now look at what we need and there is a great chance that we get it. plus we have two other picks that we can use to possibly trade up to three. i think not getting 1 is the best thing that could have happened.
Well we sent former number 4 Webb to represent the Kings, and we end up with the 4th pick. Anyone else see the cruel irony here…
man i agree WTF. we got robbed again. lets just hope no one picks rubio yet. i doubt it tho.
I would like to see Rubio fall to four, but that is unlikely. I think we should take some consideration into Brandon Jennings. In my opinion before he went to Europe he was a more athletic Jason Williams, now he's even better, I say we get him.
This team is cursed…this is definitely a sign from above. I'm just glad I didn't renew my season tickets
Idk what to say!!!!!! I think if you have the worst record you should get the first pick….thats just me tho, I mean Blake Griffin….OMG cant get any better then that….and what happens we get robbed…..As the Mock draft goes, were looking at a PF just like Blake and wow hes nothing like Blake, jezzzz this just sucks…..Lets just hope they dont pick someone and then he doesnt play and then we trade him in a year or two……..
why do clippers always get good as picks, they been rebuilding thier team for how many years now. yeah i agree about brandon jenning, but lets just see how things playout. kings better not choose a sorry as player like spenser hawes.
they will make the best of the situation…… support the team
100% agreed. This shouldnt be decided on chance, but fact.
who they need to draft is someone from the monarchs maybe cause they really suck
I know Mr. Petrie knows way more about the game than I do and I consider myself a Petrie fan…. but as a Kings fan…my 2 cents…….please check out Brandon Jennings. ESPN and NBADraft.net says James Harden should be the Kings pick at 4 (sigh)… but I was relieved to see draftexpress.com pick Jennnings. Sorry Beno fans. Please look at Jennings' video at ESPN and the ones below…he's not just flash…but a pure point guard with bounce

Sorry about that…I screwed up
here's another one of Brandon Jennings

And this one of Jennings….again sorry

I can see it now!!! The Sacramento Kings select BRANDON JENNINGS!!
Come on Guys, the guy who said Spencer Hawes is sorry does not know about basketball, Hawes reminds me a little of Utah Jazz Okur the center that can shoot 3s, Hawes has a shot, GIVE IT A COUPLE of years and trust me Jason Thompson and Spencer are going to be some good players, for the 4th pick I think its a very good one, we need a pg, Jennings is very good and who forgot about Stephen Curry from Davidson,,that guy can play PG or SG,, I know the Kings had some bad seasons But the true fans stick together, I hate this BullS**t that people have to say Kings are sorry and when there winners again I wonder what they going to say HUH!!!!!!!
I was listening to the lottery on khtk and when we got the 4th pick i wanted to drive off a cliff, I mean of all the horrible luck, what a way to end the worst season I've seen from the kings in my lifetime… I mean I am a die hard kings fan, even when getting laughed at by laker fans, but i am not enthused at all about next season : (
Woo….. (detect the sarcasm)
No what will happen is we will trade some of our best players for three nobodies who will drag the team down. Story of the kings since the adelman days
to the guy above, to be a winner kings have to win a championship first. If you look at teams like Psurts, LAkers, Celtics, you will see they have been winning for a while. Man i am kings fan but i am real tired of other kings talking about just making it to the playoffs. Lot of people criticize Chris Webber but ever since he was traded we went down hill from there on. What we need with this lottery pick is a star who can contribute right away. We having been loosing for so long..i mean its about time we traded away half our roster for some decent players. We talking about how we need a good coach but what is that gonna do with a untalented roster. Even Phil Jackson wont be able to get us anywhere with the players we have. And you can take my word for it. If we dont shake up our roster, another coach wont do squat for this team.
fcuk the lottery., grrrrrrrrr KINGS deserves to have the no.1 pick!
fck LA CLIPPERS fck MEMPHIS fck OKC., they don't deserve their draft pick spots.,
blake griffin don't have a future in LAC! fck.
I like most of the people have commented cannot believe the Kings with the WORST record did not get the #1 pick…it really is unfair. Having said that I do believe the Kings have some great young players. Hawes I think is coming along nicely with the exception of his temper and Thompson was great. What the Kings need is a DEFENSIVE minded coach who will sit the lazy Kings players down when they are not pulling their weight and only worried about scoring. We have 3 picks in the top 31 so I believe we do have hope and again I say if he is available to the Kings take Flynn from Syracuse. He has a very high basketball IQ, is a good 3 point shooter and passes the ball well. Udrih can be back up as he is not going to get it done as a starter. As much as Kevin Martin is a scorer he plays no defense and he is supposed to be the building block for the Kings which is a real problem for me.
Will I could not agree with you more. I live in Florida and like you are a TRUE Kings fan. I always go the to Orlando game when the Kings come to town and did get to go to Arco on the way to Hawaii two years ago. I think Hawes is coming along very nicely other than his temper outbursts and Thompson has been nothing but a pleasant surprise. I also think very highly of Francisco Garcia. As for the rest of the guys, they need to pick up their defense in a big way, starting namely with Kevin Martin. As for a point guard I am a big fan of Flynn from Syracuse (He and Donte would play well together too)
this has to be the worst thing that could have happened i mean how do we fall from 1 to 4. dam i was really looking forward to Blake Griffin as a king or Rubio would have been good 2 but i juz dont see how were gonna get any better with number 4. so guys hard to say it but strap in cuz itz gunna be another long season!!!!
I have read your comments and understand the frustration many of you have for where we are at right now. But it is 8am and we are in here working to continue to turn this organization around. There will be no quit among the management and scouting staff. We have the #4, #23, and #31 picks, which are some very strong assets. We have scouted more games in person than we ever have before and we start a series of workouts for draft prospects tomorrow that will continue all the way up to the draft. I still feel we will make an impact in this draft and add to our young core.
Also wanted to post for you the last 10 years of picks at the No. 4 position.
2008 – Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City
2007 – Mike Conley Jr., Memphis
2006 – Tyrus Thomas, Chicago
2005 - Chris Paul, New Orleans
2004 – Shaun Livinston, LA Clippers
2003 – Chris Bosh, Toronto
2002 – Drew Gooden, Memphis
2001 – Eddy Curry, Chicago
2000 – Marcus Fizer, Chicago
1999 – Lamar Odom, LA Clippers
Getting number four really does suck. Does Diogu have talent that we can use? I know Mullen picked him at five. I am really discouraged but we must spin our lot and think of all the great number four picks like Bosh. I noticed that Quincy one of my favorites has signed next year with the Raptors. Why did he fail here? I bleed purple and I really hope we can get the right coach and the right players. I think that to do both is a really long shot. Maybe Ricky will fall to fourth. HAHA
There are so many scenarios and options in this Draft it is hard to keep up with everything. If the top three are chosen then where do the Kings fit in? If Rubio by chance is not chosen 3rd, then the Kings could option for Rick Rubio or Jennings for Point Gaurd. Should the Kings choose Rubio or Brandon Jennings for Point Gaurd? Rubio has a groin injury and Jennings really is fast, but he needs to bulk up and get more body weight.
A player I would seriously consider would be shooting guard Demar Derozan. He has really good potential. He is athletic, 6'6", at 210 pounds. He really can leap and has an explosive offense. He moves well with the ball and yes he can shoot jumpers. He also makes defensive efforts. He could really grow into an outstanding player.
Does it all really matter when the Maloofs being businessmen will move the team to Vegas if Sacramento can't build a new stadium. The Maloofs came to Sac. and poured lots of $$$$ into the team and the result a very competitive team and now being cheap you get what u pay for. So sad for Sacramento even if your not a basketball fan, this city is going to be like a big Stockton or Modesto without the Kings. We need a new stadium more than a #1 draft pick!
i like Demar Derozan at #4 you should check out youtube. Comparison: Vince Carter he is a Jaw Dropping Athletic Specimen.
No Blake Griffin? No problem!
This is the best chance for Jason Thompson, entering his second year in the NBA to prove everybody what he got.
JT is also mr.double-double during his college years!
About the #4 pick, the KINGS now just have to focus in taking in a PG.
If Ricky Rubio falls to # 4 (which is unlikely) it's good!
If not, there are other PG available - Stephen Curry, Ty Lawson, Brandon Jennings….
Derozan is really athletic and young, it would take him a couple of years to develop but may be worth the wait, I really like Stephen Curry's upside too, but as well i think he would take a couple years to develop and would be a roll of the dice, I think both of these guys will be hit or miss, but if we want impact now i see Tyreke evans, Brandon Jennings and Jonny Flynn as one of our picks, with all starting over Beno they would all be excited to come to Sac and play right away. In afterthought, i still see the kings trading this 4th pick in some way to save money, I just don't think the maloofs have the desire after putting so much money foward for the kings in the late 90's early 00's. But I hope for the teams sake the maloofs will prove me wrong!
The Kings should consider Earl Clark of Louisville, he reminds me of Scottie Pippen.
well i would still go for brandon jennings stephen curry or jrue holiday they are all good point guards hopefully they ge brandon jennigs he has more potential than rubio and will most likely develop faster than him
Fire Petrie!
if you can do a better job than Petrie! go ahead!:p
Teams tank on purpose if you do that.
yea i agree they should make petrie coach this team because im still pissed off with how we did in the draft.and to think i was gonna come all the way from the bahamas 2 see the kings play HA i guess i will go and play golf cause the kings are gonna suck for a while unless the maloofs spend money 2 get another superstar alonside kevin martin 2 get him some help because ever since c webb was traded they went downhill from there
I'll go further, The 2004 season, we were no.1 until Chris Webb. came back from knee Injury. Then we Dropped to… 4! His position was Power Forward aka, 4!!
If Vlade was there, we could have gotten, secdond, or first!, then with our luck, 5th LOL!!
I agree were skrewed. We deserve a top 3 pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like some people already know who to draft. Brandon Jennings. He may not the brightest guy(remember SAT/ACT score?), he may not be the best player in Italy last year, he might have injured his knee or whatever. But let' get real. Kings need a point guard and we love run and gun. When we had Jason Williams, maybe we never got to the conference final but we were the most exciting team in the world. As much as I hate to admit, even with Jennings, we can not be a championship contender next year. Kings is a young team, has a lot of improve on. Though, drafting Jennings can be the beginning of it. Blake Griffin is a great player. But Spencer and JT are much better combined. Ricky Rubio would be a great fit for Kings. But I don't think he would fall to #4 otherwise we should pick him. Thabeet is an athletic player. But I don't know if he has what it takes to play in the big league. I love Beno and Bobby but they are back ups. I believe Jennings is the guy to draft this year. Or we can trade the pick to Wizards for Gilbert Arenas. Now, there is an idea.
BRANDON JENNINGS ENOUGH SAID!!!!!
Its also possible that we trade this pick down further into the lottery to pick up a guy like Ty Lawson or Johnny Flynn of Syracuse along with other players. We have a bunch of options. Obviously, with the draft being weak this year, one or two picks wont change much but it is a start. Sometimes, team's have to reach rock bottom to get back to the top (ex: Cleveland before LeBron, Magic before Dwight, Hornets before CP3, Heat before D-Wade). We've been at rock bottom for a while and I think we are due to finally improve in these next few seasons.
To Orri the above guy you are a dumb ass and I think you are a fake kings fan. We just sucured the number four spot in the draft, you know that jeff is going to find a good or even better GREAT player like brandon who is like J-Will and than George and Galvin are going to get someone in the free agency. So Orri shut up and either get on are bandwagon or go somewhere else faker……. GO KINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with it being a little unfair for the Kings to come up with the #4 pick but now we have to make with what he have. I believe the Kings should take Flynn as well but taking him at #4 is a reach. Maybe we could trade down in the lottery to get him plus more players. If we do take Flynn we have to keep him on the bench behind Beno so he could develop more. (Btw I am one of those people who thinks Beno could be good again next season depending on the coach. I dont see how people call Beno a major bust, he showed in 08 that he could run a team and at the end of this season he played a lot better. Just give him a little time and maybe he could play better.) Kevin Martin is a great scorer but he is improving on defense and I think he led the team in steals.
Quit posting videos of guys who can dunk. Alot of people can dunk like that. We don't need someone who can dunk but that can dominate at their position. We needed either 1st or second pick and we didn't get it. Cherry on top for a bad season. Next season = lame. Every king player should be praying that the first 3 teams ahead of us don't get rubio. It's possible since they all need big men. As far as a head coach goes, we need an avery johnson.
you know what that's true your right we do need a lot of DEFENSIVE, when I see KMARTIN play this guy is very good in scoring but I never really seen him play D, it sometimes looks like when his teammates pass the ball to him he only wants to score, if he wants to be a top player in the NBA his just missing D, I bit if he works on that he would be a allstar,, I do like Flynn but i think we need Jennings or Curry,,,
I agree with you, Jennings is a Jerry Bayless and I saw how Rubio ridiculized him in EuroLeague. Truth is that we need Ricky Rubio and the sad thing is that if he is not picked in the first three he wont came to the nba (because of the buyout), therefore we need Petrie making a deal with Grizzlies, THATS OUR BEST CHANCE!!
Antonio,Kevin is not a superstar, he's not even an an allstar. He's a tradedable product right now.
Remember dis fools!!!! The Celtics didn't get the pick they wanted either in odem, so they made some trades and won the championship, so anything is possible.
Ricky Rubio wants Sacramento??

I absolutely agree with you. I admit at first I was bummed at the prospect of not getting BG, but we are stacked at that position. I would be hesitate to see JT come off the bench and now that we won't get Blake, we can focus on needs, like a TRUE point guard. Plus Petrie is a GENIUS GM! Look at how good Jason and Spencer and Peja. Hedo, J-Will, Kevin, Cisco, and others were and are. Things are looking up!!! At #4 I think we should try and get Holliday if he is available.
AMEN!!! Lets keep bashing the fake Kings fans! (if they are fans at all!)
How exciting is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOHOO!! to know that CP3 went #4. We are in a great position!!! Have faith Kings fans!!!
"RubioKukoc" will go either 2 or 3…wishful thinking won't change that. I prefer Jennings at 4, but Derozan is good also.
RubioKukoc "ridiculizing" Jennings? I can't find any videos of that. Please post if you have them. This is the only video I can find (you can't "ridiculize" what you can't catch, start the video at 1:10)

Hi! I went to Barceona to see the match, and I saw how Ricky pissed Brandon during all the match, please next time you argue dont do it with a youtube video, where with a 2 meter advantage BJ runs faster than RR.
Although i have to recognize that BJ is more athletic than RR, I KNOW what is required on a PG = Ball Handling, passing abilities , defense and scoring. In all of these skills RR defeats BJ.
Finally ask yourself why does RR has so much importance on his team, leads it, is always a starter and analysts put him in the top 3 and BJ not.
BTW DKV Juventut defeated Lottomatica di Roma in Euroleague.
You went to Barcelona to see the match, and YOU KNOW what is required to be a PG…are you a scout…who are you?! You obviously have an interest in Euroleague…(meters?!)
Anyway, enlighten me,again I ask, post some video of the two. I can't find any..you would think somebody would have posted video of the two by now…
Everybody agrees that Jennings had a poor experience in Euro… duh
The point is this: the Kings won't be able to get Rubio, so if you're a Kings fan, too bad.
I think Jennings is a "risk" worth taking…
My 2 Cents: Rubio Versus Jennings Comparison.
It looks like the Kings will draft a point gaurd on the first round 4th pick. I have watched videos on both players. These are my conclusions.
Rubio: He is a terrific passer and makes other players play better. He can also make defensive plays. Concerns: He tends to carry the ball when he dribbles and might be considered a travel in the NBA. When shooting from the floor he does not jump. He could easily be blocked by other players. Highlights: He has a terrific one arm ball behind the back hesitation step. He makes good passes.
Jennings: He can shoot and dunk. For a point gaurd that is good. He is fast off the step and wants to score with the basketball. He also can pass the ball. Him being a left hand oriented person could make defending him challenging. He is a gifted athelete. Concerns: His size and jumpshot is inconsistent. Highlights: He can dunk and shoot the ball.
Both point gaurds are good players. Who is best for the Sacramento Kings? I am leaning towards Jennings. He has got allot going for him and he is playing in the European League with Rubio. OK. That's my 2 cents. Go Kings!
It sucks to end up getting the #4 pick but at the sametime you have to think about the needs of the kings…We do have a lot of needs:) However, we need a PG/SG more than any other positon. I'm exctied because the player we need is right in front of our eyes…with out a doubt I would draft Steph Curry. The kid has the "IT" factor that's hard to find. He's had a weak supporting cast around him, but can flat out score points. Everyone knows the ball is going to him, but he still remains one of the best,if not the best, scoring talents in the NCAA. Steph is growing every year as a defensive player and passer…Let's remember that he's only played PG for one year. I can only imagine how great he will be with some actual talent around him like a Kevin Martin. From a marketing stand point…the kid will sell some tickets. Steph put Davidson on the map, and was the talk of the NCAA tournament. Davidson was getting national attention over power house UCONN ha ha This is a talent we can't pass up. We have our young big men in JT and Spencer, both of which grew so much with the playing time they received last year.
