Petrie Reports From Spain

May 16, 2009 by Troy Hanson

Geoff Petrie is in Spain scouting and provided twitter updates throughout this morning’s DKV Joventut at Real Madrid opening round game of the ACB Spanish League Playoffs. He was there to take another look at Joventut point guard Ricky Rubio. Unfortunately, Rubio only played 10 minutes before leaving the game for good early in the second quarter due to injury. He finished with two points (0-1 FG, 2-2 FT), one rebound, and two assists. Real Madrid won the game, 79-62, to take a 1-0 series lead. The series will resume back in Barcelona on Monday. It is unknown at this time as to whether Rubio will play in Monday’s contest.

    When Geoff attends games, whether overseas or in the states, does he attend the game as a “normal” fan, or is he credentialed and entering through a special media type entrance? Do the other people in the stands know who he is??

    Thanks you!

    Artemus

    The obvious question i think is how serious is the injury to Rubio? And i'm not sure if this is suppose to be discussed/disclosed before the draft, but also what does Geoff feel the Kings biggest need is? I'm not asking for names by any means, just more of a general area of real concern that Geoff wants to address as soon as possible.

    We're in no position to draft for need. We need a star. PERIOD, EXCLAMATION MARK, WHATEVER

  4. xelxock on May 16th, 2009 11:07 pm

    Just what the Kings need–Rubio look at more of the lame and/or lazy. It's time for the Maloofs to hire a more "with it" general manager–perhaps even to sell the franchise to some less-meddlesom or at least more basketball-savvy zillionaires.

    Xelxock, you obviously have no interest in sports and have absolutely no idea who Ricky Rubio is, let alone what the Kings need. The list below is of all the awards and accomplishments that Rubio has achieved.

    * Won 3 Catalan National Leagues (2005, 2007, 2008)
    * Won the FIBA EuroCup Championship (2006)
    * Led the Spanish ACB League in steals (2007)
    * Won the Spanish ACB League Rising Star Award (2007)
    * 2 times FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year (2007, 2008)
    * Won the Spanish King's Cup (2008)
    * Won the ULEB Cup Championship (2008)
    * All-Spanish ACB League Team (2008)
    * Voted the Spanish ACB League's Best Point Guard (2008)
    * Mr. Europa Award (2008)
    * Spanish ACB League Defensive Player of the Year (2009)

    He was the MVP and defensive player of the year- what more could you ask for? Imagine Steve Nash and Chris Paul offense combined with Rajon Rondo defense- nearly an unstoppable point guard. He will be able to hold his own against the likes of Chauncey Billups and Baron Davis defensively while bring a dazzling offensive display with Nash like passes and CP3 like moves. What we need now is a point guard, and Rubio looks to be our guy.

  6. GetReal on May 17th, 2009 4:54 am

    Rubio is the combination of Nash, Paul, and Rondo?

    Wow, even his agent is blushing at that suggestion.

  7. GoKingsFan_CAM on May 17th, 2009 5:47 am

    Do the Kings need another injured player? I have know idea the extent of Rubios injury, however, the last things the Kings need is a 2nd round pick to be sitting on the sidelines. I say the Kings should look for players like Chris Bosh or Shawn Marion. Go Kings.

  8. tine on May 17th, 2009 5:49 am

    Up for Ricky Rubio!
    One injury doesn't take away all the achievements he has accomplished.
    Can u name one player that hasn't experienced to get injured???
    Even the best players do! Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Kevin Martin……..
    Blake or Rubio still remains the top 2 pick! Ricky Rubio for PG pick!

  9. William Lee on May 17th, 2009 9:40 am

    KINGS needs more power and physical players; our players are very skillful but too weak.

  10. Bojan on May 17th, 2009 5:09 pm

    If anyone is having any doubts about what type of a player the Kings need, than take a look at the Playoffs. Everyone seems to be jumping on the "more inside power/size" bandwagon, well if i'm not mistaken a team by the name of Denver had some very nice inside power with Nene, Birdman and Martin. And um how well did that turn out for them? Yet after they got a real/true point guard suddenly they are a Championship contender, now is that by coincidence? Is it a coincidence that Chicago took Boston to 7 games because of Rose and Gordon? Is it a coincidence that Rondo averaging a triple-double got Boston past the first round? Is it a coincidence that 5'4 Arron Brooks is the reason the Rockets are playing a game 7 with LA? Now granted all of those players have gotten help, but without them their teams do not achieve what they have achieved so far. So i think a lot of people around here need to ask themselves whether we eventually want to be a team competing for the Playoffs or a team in contention for that Larry O'Brien Trophy? It always has and always will start and end with a great point guard or a point guard type player.

    Hi!! The injury of Ricky Rubio will last 2 weeks according to spanish media, therefore he wont play the spanish playoffs. Lets keep our support for Ricky Rubio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. 10KingsFan10 on May 17th, 2009 10:24 pm

    Hey, GoKingsFan_CAM- Rubio would be the second overall pick, not a second round pick. A second round pick would be a pick 31 or below, which the Kings have one- #31. Rubio's injury was a groin injury, but that shouldn't affect him too much as long as his staff is smart about playing him. It depends on how tough the injury was

    And you say the Kings should look for a Chris Bosh or Shawn Marion- that's great, but if there was a player like that, the Kings would have that player on their radar. Right now, there is no dynamic player like the ones you mentioned- only Rubio and Griffin.

  13. antonio braynen on May 18th, 2009 3:01 am

    first of all the kings need 2 get hubbie brown as a coach hire c-webb as a big man coach then draft blake griffin because we need 2 get better at rebounding and defending if hawes and griffin in the front line the kings will be back up top no disrespct 2 jason thompson he can slide over 2 the 3 also kevin martin needs 2 stop getting inured and be the kings closer because he dissapears in the 4th quater i me if your gonna wear#23 ya gatta play like it.but i am a huge kings fan

  14. GoKingsFan_CAM on May 18th, 2009 5:27 pm

    Yes. You are correct. I did mean second overall. I believe any top 3 draft picks would be a good addition to the Kings team, Griffin, Rubio, or Thabeet. I only mention Chris Bosh and Shawn Marion as potential veteran players that would anchor the Kings team. I believe the Kings need some Veteran players to anchor all the younger players on the team. Petrie will probably trade players and possibly draft picks to get veteran players in Sacramento. I am hoping the Kings will keep Ike Diago because he has a good work ethic and showed he can defend and score.

  15. GoKingsFan_CAM on May 18th, 2009 6:11 pm

    Thanks 10KingsFan10 for correction. Go Kings!

  16. Pol on May 18th, 2009 6:29 pm

    Ricky Ribio is playing the 2nd match of spanish playoffs the injury wasnt strong!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. mattj916 on May 18th, 2009 10:49 pm

    Rubio is OBVIOUSLY who the Kings' should take

  18. KINGS4 LIFE on May 19th, 2009 2:58 pm

    I've been a solid kings fan for about 12 years now. I would like for the kings to Draft RICKY RUBIO, 1 they need PG, 2 He is the best PG outthere.. I should say Blake Griffin, but having Jason Thompson and Ike DOIGU, sounds good already.. if we can trade 1st pick to 2nd and 3rd that will be great.. Pick rubio overall 2nd and then Thabeet for over all 3rd.. hows that sounds.. Then you have a solid 5.. Thabeet, Diogu, Garcia, Martin, Rubio.. with back-up players like.. Hawes, Thompson, Nocioni, Mc Cants and Whats their PG name now?

  19. William Lee on May 19th, 2009 4:49 pm

    Billups, Gordon, Rose, and Rondo are power and physical point guards. Don't you think?

  20. Guillermo on May 20th, 2009 10:28 pm

    He is going to be a bluff. In 6 years he will be the beast Point Guard in the NBA but atm he really needs another year in the ACB at DKV, and serious training to improve his athletism and especially his 3-Point shot.

  21. Cesar on May 21st, 2009 8:40 am

    Hello from Spain,
    Don't worry, Ricky is not seriously injuried. Yesterday he played the 2nd match agains't Real Madrid. DKV won the game and Ricky was the star definitively 16+7, 6 steals 6 assists. He is going to be one of the most complete point guards in the world.
    About the Spanish national team … Calderón, Rubio, Gasol&Gasol, Reyes (the best player in Spain, now), Garbajosa, … you will see this team a lot of times with medals in the neck! :)

  22. Riseup on May 22nd, 2009 5:48 pm

    Since Spain we want ricky rubio in sacramento,we hate memphis,he isnt injured,he won the second match alone like a star with only 18 years old.

    This days i heard since EEUU:"Ricky rubio is slow…" I want say to you go youtube and put ricky rubio mix,in the video you can see how ricky steal the ball to chris paul,the spanish league is the second best league in the world,and he played since he had got 14 years old,with 16 he was the best in euroleague in steals,is the best defensive point guard in europe with 18.

    He isnt offensive like chris paul,he wont do 20+ points,i think he will do 15+,he is good in steals,rebs,and he has got the best court and long vision i'have never seen,he is better def than rondo.

    His agent said "Ricky doesnt want play in memphis or oklahoma"
    ALL SPAIN WANTS RICKY IN SACRAMENTO!!

  23. sactown on May 23rd, 2009 4:59 pm

    I can't believe the kings fell all the way to 4th. That's why Kings can't rely on the draft. Petrie need to make some trades, but he's waiting for the 2010 free agency. That means one more bad year for the kings.

  24. Jeffrey Pogue on May 25th, 2009 7:31 am

    1. Fire Petrie and bring in an up and coming hot shot who knows talent.
    2. Hire Chris Weber as Head Coach and pair him up with a successful former head coach.
    3. Trade for one good big man and point guard and build next years roster around them.
    4. Keep the owners out of the day to day operations.
    5. Shoot to win 50 games and make the playoffs.
